Collapsing Buildings in Florianopolis
Buildings constructed close to the beaches on the Atlantic coast of Florianopolis have been collapsing onto the sand this past week. The high post-cyclone waves of March that washed away the top layer of sand left flat beaches behind, with subsequent high waves eroding dunes and vegatation behind beaches such as Armação and Barra da Lagoa. Houses, bars and even a Lifeguard Tower have fallen, with the army called in to help protect other threatened houses.
ASP WQS Event won by Aritz Aranburu
Aritz Aranburu from the Basque Country beat home hopes Rodrigo Dornelles and Gabriel Medina to win the ASP WQS Maresia Surf International 2010 at Praia Mole. The event had been delayed by high winds cancelling Friday's schedule.
Ironman Brazil 2010 in Florianopolis
The 2010 Ironman Brazil comes to Florianopolis on 30th May. The sea and roads around Jurere, Canasvieiras and the main highway down to the city and back will all be busy with swimmer, riders, runners and spectators throughout Sunday.
Tainha Time in Florianopolis
Late May through to mid-July is Tainha Time in Florianopolis, as thousands of tainha come to breed in the waters, and hundreds of fishermen try to catch them. Surfing is prohibited on many Floripa beaches during this time.
