Getting Here & Around
Florianópolis lies around 500km south of Sao Paulo and 800km southwest of Rio de Janeiro on the southern part of Brazil’s Atlantic coast, at around the same latitude as Johannesburg or Brisbane and the same longitude as Greenland. It has an airport – Aeroporto Hercilio Luz – with direct flights to both those cities as well as others in the south of Brazil and Buenos Aires. Long distance buses also make the journey regularly.

Arriving internationally is possible, with connections in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro or even Buenos Aires.
From the north, seats on the right hand side of the plane give the best views over the southern coastline of Brazil, including the Baia da Paranagua and the mountains up to Curitiba, plus mainland beach towns such as Balneario Camboriu.
The view of the Floripa beaches and the swirls of sand close to the surface of Lagoa de Conceição are wonderful, before your plane heads out to sea and turns back in over Ilha da Campeche and the beach of that name. It is possible to see people surfing from the air here.
From the south, the left hand side should give the best views of the Rio Grande do Sul coastline, with lagoons galore before the stunning beaches of southern Santa Catarina around Garopaba. You may even be able to see the dark shapes of Southern Right Whales frolicking off Praia da Rosa before the southern mountains of Ilha da Santa Catarina appear.
Flying to Floripa on a clear day is a real treat from anywhere and will leave you desperate to get off the plane and visit the places that you have just passed over.

Florianópolis is well connected to many cities by bus, with regular overnight and daytime services to the cities below. From all other destinations, a connection in Sao Paulo from the north or Porto Alegre from the south may be necessary.
The island of Santa Catarina lies around 5km from the main coastal road of Brazil, the notorious BR101. The road isn´t particularly well maintained, is under seemingly constant repair and upgrade, has many accidents and also very heavy traffic heading to the beaches of Santa Catarina at holiday periods. For this reason, please don´t take the journey times below as gospel, and don´t blame Go Floripa if they are out by anything up to 6 hours.
