Spring in Florianópolis -
The arrival of spring in Florianopólis brings the promise of warmer weather, more days on the beach and more people visiting the island. Floripa beaches and those on the mainland such as Praia do Rosa and Balneário Camboriu will gradually fill in the run up to Christmas and the High Season of post-Christmas through to the end of February.
There are various holiday weekends to watch out for in Spring 2009, when roads and pousadas will be especially busy. Bars and clubs will be busy too though, and the feeling of summer will be in the air.
This, of course, depends on the weather. Spring 2008 in Santa Catarina was a disaster. This is no overstatement either. One of the wettest periods on record began when a cold front from the Antarctic and a warm front from the Amazon collided overhead and refused to move for weeks on end. The resulting six weeks of rain from late September onwards raised the water level so much that the incredible twelve hours of torrential rain on 22/23 November 2008 led to catastrophic flooding across the region. A month’s rain fell overnight, leading to the deaths of 126 people and more than 80,000 being evacuated from their homes, if they had homes left to evacuate.
Luckily for everyone, Spring 2009 has been nothing like this, with clear blue skies and sunny days broken by occasional rain and wild winds. This combination of weather systems is a rare occurrence, thankfully, and no sign of it happening here so far!
