Floripa Weather-
Florianópolis lies in the sub-tropics, and has sub-tropical weather. This basically means that there are actually four seasons in Floripa, rather than the wet and dry seasons you find further north in tropical Brazil. In the summer, the weather can be hot and humid as with anywhere from Buenos Aires up to Rio and further. In winter, the wind from the south brings cold air and the worst of the weather.Spring and Autumn lie somewhere in between. There is the odd cyclone, usually out at sea though with only the edge catching the coast and bringing huge waves with it. There is nothing much to fear from Floripa with regards to weather.
Summer - Verão
December to February: The Floripa high season can bring hot summer days and balmy summer eves. Humidity can be high too, and even the locals stay out of the sun during the middle of the day. Clouds and the occasional summer storm can appear towards the end of the afternoon, although stunning, colourful sunsets are just as likely. Heavy bursts of rain break up the humidity and freshen up Floripa. Daytime temperatures usually range from 25-36°C/77-97°F, dropping to 17-25°C/63-77°F at night.
Autumn - Outono
March to May: Perhaps the most pleasant time of year to be in Florianópolis. Less humidity and less cloud build-up than the height of summer means less storms and less rain too. The skies can be nothing but azure blue, with golden sunrises and pink sunsets for days on end. Daytime temperatures usually range from a less humid 20-36°C/68-97°F, dropping to 15-22°C/59-72°F at night.
Winter - Inverno
June to August: Winter has the most variable weather of the four seasons in Florianópolis. Like autumn, endless blue skies and a pleasant warm sun make you wonder why people even talk about winter on the Magical Island as you sit on the beach in your bikini. When the South Wind brings up the cold fronts from the Antarctic though, things can change. Temperatures can get chilly, though never outright cold in the coastal areas. The Vento Sul also brings the light snowfalls that can be experienced around São Joaquim in the Santa Catarina Serras. Daytime temperatures can be anywhere from 10-28°C/50-82°F, very occasionally dropping below freezing at night, with a wind-chill factor to take into account as well. Coats are usually needed for Floripa’s winter nights as temperatures can be somewhere between freezing and 15°C/72°F.
Spring - Primavera
September to November: Spring warms up Floripa to very pleasant temperatures, but it can also be the wettest time of the year. Heavy spring rains across the whole of Santa Catarina caused massive flooding in 2008, after a cold front from the Antarctic and a warm front from the Amazon met overhead and refused to move for weeks. Hopefully this won’t be an annual climatic event. As with every other season, the many clear days are absolutely beautiful, with nights improving all the time too. Daytime temperatures usually range from 22-34°C/72-93°F, dropping to 17-25°C/63-77°F at night.
In general, the weather in Floripa is nicely unpredictable, with days on the beach or walking on the trail possible at any time of year. You can also run into the kind of weather that makes you want to stay inside too though, but never for very long.
